Standing Column Wells at Villanova University

Since 2001 ARB/Geowell has been working with Villanova University to foster geothermal HVAC as part of their campus-wide building “greening” program. The opportunity has included engineering student participation in the design, analysis and verification of a new SCW approach intended as a faster and less expensive way to deploy the well string. In 2009, two 800’ wells were installed in front of Fedigan Hall to supplement the 700,000 BTUH heating and 45 ton cooling loads. The resulting hybrid HVAC system is described here along with the hydrogeological and thermal testing results that preceded the design phase.

Critical Measurement of Well Thermal Properties to Support Design

For large tonnage (100 tons or greater) HVAC systems, it is imperative that a test well be drilled and that measurement of the thermal characteristics of the well (as representative) be undertaken prior to a final design. The defining thermal properties include: the “effective” thermal conductivity, K, of the formation surrounding the bore; the thermal diffusivity and the characteristic thermal decay rate. Armed with this knowledge, the geothermal engineer can begin to specify the design (wetted ft per delivered ton) to meet a building heating or cooling load. This paper will demonstrate the measurement, analysis and interpretation required to extract this information, using a number of geothermal installations to exemplify the approach.
